Part I: Mick Jagger The Rolling Stones And The Sixties

Part I, Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones And The Sixties

Andrew Look Oldham Learning The Ropes

Andrew Loog Oldham

I’m in the James Dean suite, better known as two shoe boxes at the back of the Hotel Iroquois on West 44th Street in Manhattan and life has definitely lost its color.

You try for a few things to forget that he who is not busy being born is busy dying, to block out the thought of yourself as a wingless, hurt, spineless bird of the 60s.

Another grey-line- they’re not even white anymore- another grappa or Southern-anything-without-Comfort can bring you back for a few minutes but it’s not a given. Occasionally you get up from the couch and have to check yourself out in the mirror above the fireplace to make sure you are still there, and that’s an effort.

One could say that when life becomes too painful, the body sickens and withers and the soul departs.

--Andrew Loog Oldham, Stoned, 1995

Mick

Andrew Loog Oldham was the promoter, the guiding light, who led the five lads comprising the Rolling Stones from a squalid existence to the top of revolutionary society. As he wrote the above quote from Vol. 1 of his excellent two volume autobiography, Stoned, he viewed his past from the perspective of drug induced oblivion. It hadn’t always been that way.

Andrew had been present at the creation of that part of the Revolution known as the British Invasion in the history of Rock and Roll. He had in fact been one of its principal guides.

But, as even the most obscure molecule has its origins in a more distant past a background of the macro cosmos leading to the micro-cosmos Andrew Oldham might provide some insights.

The actual starting point of what became Andrew Loog Oldham is, oh, say, 1789 and the French Revolution of which, of course the future molecule of Andrew had no part. Let us skip lightly over the intervening hundred years or so to the defining moment of our own existence, the years after 1900.

Of supreme importance is the career of that master demolition artist, Sigmund Freud, but we’re just going to be dealing with conclusions not origins or development. Nevertheless Freud began his assault on Western consciousness in 1900 with his Interpretation Of Dreams- the excavations of the unconscious and demolition of the conscious. We will bear this is mind because Freud’s vision of psychology is important.

The stately self-confidence of the Victorian Age was destroyed by the horrors of what at that time was known as The Great War, the term WWI evolving only after twenty-five years or so later. WWII gave that previous war its modern nomenclature.

Thus 1914 commenced a hundred years war in which WWII, the Korean War, The Viet Nam War and the Communist subversion of US institutions was done reaching a culmination under a world wide Communist government led by China with Barack Obama as its king, emperor or dictator.

The First World War destroyed the flower of Western manhood, compounded by the destruction of European manhoodof the succeeding WWII the loss was not reparable up to our time. While the ‘Pacifists’, the physically weak and mental imbeciles remained at home with the elderly and women the best and bravest were sent on an unproductive suicide mission. As the undrafted at least were the patriotic and nationalists that also left the international Communists at home to assume positions of real power- the directors of the war, that is, the beneficiaries of the slaughter.

After the War the Third International interfered in the internal affairs of the nations nourished by the West’s absurd notion of democracy setting up power points in Western capitols that resulted in Popular Front qua Communist governments in all Western States with the exception of the Axis powers who nevertheless adopted socialist administrations.

In the meantime the soldiers returned after the war in various stages of shell shock or mental discomfort of some kind to try to put their lives in order without any assistance from the State that put them in harm’s way in the charnel house. They were greeted on their return by enormous social disorganization caused by the Communists who for instance led the general strike of 1929 in Great Britain and in general caused a conflict between two different economic or essentially religious approaches.

The General Strike was followed by the world wide economic depression that lasted until the religious war of 1939-45 between Communism and Rationality. The former was led by the USSR and Stalin while the latter was led by Hitler, his Germany and the Axis. The result was a forgone conclusion as both the US and USSR were united against a pitifully weak German and Axis Powers.

In this second major incident of the Hundred Years War Britain was all but demolished. She was the big loser. As the incident ended in 1945 London was all put a pile of rubble. From the rubble came the second phase of the Rock and Roll generations.

Since the discussion is centered around the Rolling Stones , Bill Wyman the eldest of the group was born in 1935 thereby having definite memories of the bombing. Charlie Watts, Jagger, Richards and Jones came along in ‘42 and ‘43. The genius who promoted the group, Andrew Loog Oldham, was born in 1944 a couple years earlier than the baby boomers, remaining a part of the war babies.

London from the end of the incident to 1960 and even beyond retained evidence of the bombing. The devastation was nearly terminal.

Replacing English manhood on the front during the war years were millions of US soldiers, sailors and airmen. Thus the women were not necessarily without men. Most such relations did not lead to stable commitments resulting in many illegitimate children. Yet many American men wed their English girlfriends returning them to the US. In my boyhood I knew or knew of several English war brides, so there must have thousands or tens of thousands of them. This may to some extent have relieved the disparity between the abundance of women and the paucity of men, balancing society somewhat.

As it turned out the fulcrum of the Stones, Andrew Loog Oldham, was one of those unfortunate bastards. Even though his mother took his father’s name his status affected the development of his character.

Rationing of essentials continued until 1953 so that Wyman fully experienced the deprivation while the others endured some of it, Oldham the least. Let’s say that they all had less than cheery childhoods while those of us of the same age cohort in the US while having reduced comforts, which were scarcely noticeable to me if at all, knew little deprivation saving that there were few men around. Richards’ felt the rationing of candy rather intensely while I, in the US, could spend whatever little money I had on candy and you can bet I did. Loved candy and ice cream then and love them now.

II.

We’ll begin then with Andrew Loog Oldham as he knew how to take some self-absorbed nearly amateur musicians with a group identity and market them not only to England but the US and ultimately, the world. The Stones were among the first global bands.

Coming from a world scarred by war and a son of an unwed mother who next formed a long standing relationship with a married man who did treat Andrew well the boy still developed a psychosis. Caught up in the glamour he tried to make his way from age seventeen. He was part of the first generation that had difficulties separating movies from real life. Andrew saw a lot of them taking them as education developing his persona from them. Two influential movies and characters around which he formed the core of his persona he mentions frequently. Expresso Bongo, a not bad rock and roll vehicle for Cliff Richards, contributed the character Johnny Jackson very convincingly played by Laurence Harvey. Jackson was essentially a street hustler who overplayed his hand as Andrew himself would do.

A second personality forming movie was the grim, even repulsive The Sweet Smell Of Success starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis and based on the life of the reptile journalist Walter Winchell. Once again a couple characters who overplayed their hand ending in disaster.

Andrew took flings around the incipient glamour industries that would form Swinging England including Mary Quant and others before settling on the truly surface glamour of the recording industry.

He introduced himself to Brian Epstein becoming a publicist for the Beatles. There could have been no premonition of the phenomenal success of the Beatles leading to the British Invasion. The Beatles success itself remains a mystery to me. I can guess who engineered the situation but I can’t explain its success. Certainly when Andrew heard of the Rolling Stones in 1963 before the Beatles’ success in the US he could only have been thinking of conquering England.

At the time Andrew found them the Stones were building a reputation as a stage band, but small. Appearing in Rochester they performed before only thirty people, which swelled to sixty shortly, hardly enough to build an empire on, yet it worked. When he saw this very small situation he realized he had the chance of a lifetime; a seize it or lose it situation. Andrew was definitely a visionary of no mean farsightedness. His problem was that he was underage unable to legally act on his own. He was forced to include an old line manager to front for him named Eric Easton. Formed in a small time England Easton hadn’t the imagination to take the Stones global while Andrew did.

Andrew then had to bide his time until he was twenty-one and able to act in his own name. This was dangerous because artist management was and is basically dishonest and Easton was of the cloth, but we will get into that later when we discuss the concept of intellectual properties.

For the time being Andrew guided the Stones to Easton.

III.

The Rolling Stones
As I say, the Stones, with the exception of Bill Wyman, were of the second generation of rockers being War Babies. They, then, experienced the bombed over London of the forties along with food rationing that lasted until 1953-54. According to Richards the lifting of the candy ration was the battle cry of freedom for British youth. One wonders why some astute entrepreneur didn’t smuggle in some M & Ms or Mars Bars from the US. Lord knows we never suffered from sugar deprivation.

Nevertheless the older age cohorts brought Dixieland music called Trad Jazz in England to the fore in the post war years while the War Babies progressed to Negro R&B and straight Blues which the first rockers had already converted to rock and roll in the US mid-fifties. At the same time Jazz had a following so that the whole of British music after 1960 or so was derived from American Negro depression music. At the line goes: The Blues ain’t nothing’ but a good man feelin’ bad, that is to say, depressed.

So the trajectory was the first group of British musicians picked up on Dixieland or Trad which is pretty much the music of depressed people trying to convince themselves they are joyous, a sort of Singing In The Rain spirit, correlating with the spirit of the immediate post-war generation. Dixieland, originating in the old French colony of New Orleans then was Negro music that tried to lift depressed spirits. It was only natural, so to speak, that a totally depressed post-war English generation would find Trad so emotionally satisfying.

In the fifties, Rock and Roll music evolved in the US based on Country music, or White blues, and certain Negro Blues influences. However the White American experience with Negroes and Negro music had been integrated into White consciousness while Negritude was rejected. It should be remembered that the cowboy singer Gene Autry not infrequently sang blues based material.

The spirit of Blues is much different than the spirit of Dixieland. R&B livened the spirits of the War Babies while still being depressed but cheered and encouraged by increasing prosperity the moved up the evolution of US Negro music from Dixieland to R&B. Thus a crossing or melding of Aryan and Negro sentiments with a heavy reverence for African culture. ‘Drop down mama, and spread yo’ legs, I’s comin’ fo’ ya and I don’t begs…’ Wonderful Lenny Bruce style stuff, that.

The R&B strain began to emerge then about 1960. Jagger, Jones, Richards were all R&B crusaders from post-puberty. Wyman came from a pop R&R background while Watts came from a Jazz backdrop. Ian Stewart was a solid Boogie Woogie pianist. Although dropped from the line up he contributed significantly to the band musically.

Of the group, including Oldham, the only member with a political consciousness and agenda was Mick Jagger. The others were either yobbos or living close to the line. It would be Jagger who gave the political direction to the group. Mick obtained a scholarship to the Communist London School of Economics where he assumed a Communist stance that he carried over to his lyrics and posturing in the Stones. He tempered his enthusiasm after 1970 as he says for ‘pragmatic’ reasons. Richards while not appearing political aided and abetted Jagger’s approach because of resentment against the ‘system’, in other words, a rebel with cause enough.

Part IV

Going With The Flow

The music business was a fairly tight knit community fully under Jewish control. The financial engine that drove it was the body of intellectual property, songs, which was known as publishing. Publishing includes all royalties whether from sheet music, recording or media play. The money from media play, mainly radio and television is collected by ASCAP and BMI. Both publishing and media are firmly under Jewish control. Aryan artists then, like it or not, always work for Jews entirely, under contract they are essentially slaves with their earnings kept ‘in trust’ by their masters, doled out on an as need basis. The absurdity of these ‘legal’ contracts is shown by the clause in the Stones contract with Allen Klein in which he wasn’t required to even pay out recording advances for twenty years after receipt. How such a clause could be supported by the courts is beyond me. But, on that later.

Now, intellectual properties are the easiest property to steal. Quite frequently the artists don’t or didn’t even know what they were or how valuable they were. Jac Holzman of Elektra records just assigned the Doors rights to himself. Klein in some manner did the same with Jagger-Richards’ intellectual properties and he or his estate still owns them. And the law allows this.

Frequently a portion of the royalties are assigned to another entity with or without the knowledge of the writers. Then a situation arose as a result ot technology that was unforeseen and had immeasurable consequences.

Until the mid-fifties, that is from c. 1930 to 1954 radio had been a melange of programs with very few minutes a day devoted to music programming, especially of the popular sort which intellectuals have always despised. Then TV, introduced commercially after the war knocked the legs from under syndicated radio programs. For a moment it was believed that radio itself would go bankrupt. However, we teens of the era were clamoring for more popular music on the radio. It was believed that all music radio couldn’t succeed but this notion was speedily proven wrong.

We wanted to hear our records and wanted to hear the same songs and we wanted to hear them often. This led to the innovation of Top 40 radio that seldom was more than the Top Ten with new introductions. We demanded that smash hits like Lonnie Donnegan’s Rock Island Line be played once every quarter hour. This would go on for a week or two until a new hit came along. I once manipulated the dial to get seven consecutive plays of Rock Island Line before I lost my rhythm. Now, multiply 2 ½ cents a play by several tens of millions and you’ve got yourself some pocket change.

Of course a record had to be introduced or ‘broken’ as they said. The key break out markets were New York City and Los Angeles with Chicago a distant third. By the time you got those three markets behind a record every other station in the country fell in line. You had a hit. The process usually took about six months to penetrate all markets. So the top DJs in those three markets had to be serviced. You can imagine the competition for those DJ jobs. Produced some remarkable disc spinners. To listen to the radio back then was to participate in a non-stop party 24/7.

As a national break out center all at one time TV came along. Ed Sullivan could introduce the entire nation to such as Elvis Presley or the Beatles or Stones in one three minute segment. Bravo! Ed more or less led to American Bandstand fronted by the eternal teenager, now gone to his eternal rest, Dick Clark. Clark became the most powerful DJ in the history of the world. But…you had to get your record and artist on his show.

The men responsible for getting records played were called song pluggers. This was a time honored practice going back to before the electronic media to hard copy sheet music. No one had found fault with the practice of offering incentives to play records up to this point.

But now Dick Clark and American Bandstand. The incentive that would get you artist’s appearance and record played on Bandstand was a piece of the ‘action’ also called publishing. If Clark played your song, and it had to be a good one, presto! There were millions of plays on radio the very next day or sooner at 2 ½ cents a play and with luck a million sales of the 45. I think the moral is clear here. If Clark were allowed to go on collecting pieces of intellectual properties, or copyrights, within a decade or so he might be worth many times the value of Tin Pan Alley and the Brill Building put together. Now, here’s the rub…Dick Clark wasn’t Jewish.

The word from the Alley was stop Dick Clark. But how?

Well, Clark wasn’t doing anything that hadn’t been kosher from time immemorial so the only thing to do was to make the ancient practice of song plugging sound immoral; hence the name of song plugging was changed to the morally reprehensible sounding label- PAYOLA. Well, so what? So pressure was put on Congress, this became a Federal case, to investigate Dick Clark and to make it ecumenical, certain important DJs like Allen Freed, who was Jewish but not of the synagogue, and make payola if not a crime at least something that certain people were prohibited from doing.

Alan Freed, the poor fish, was totally destroyed, his life ending shortly after his condemnation. Clark, so as not to seem unfair, especially as no known crime had been violated was offered the choice of keeping Bandstand or the publishing of the songs he had already accumulated. Dick chose Bandstand although he later said that was a mistake. Tin Pan Alley was safe for a time as its power was returned to it. Once again they could control what was played and who could and could not succeed.

Now, enter Andrew Loog Oldham and The Rolling Stones.

Bob Dylan in one of his fits of delusions of grandeur claims that he was the man who brought the giant Tin Pan Alley to earth. There is no denying he made his contribution but Oldham gives greater credit to the Beatles which is probably true. By 1964 the time of the following story of Andrew’s the demise of the Alley hadn’t yet happened. This is a great story.

This story involves two people with whom the reader may or may not be familiar. One is a DJ, powerful in the business, and the other was a very powerful member of both the Gay and Jewish mafias, capable of making or breaking any aspirant to recording fame and a fixture of the Tin Pan Alley/Brill Building who most likely had a hand, if not the guiding hand, in stripping Dick Clark of his looming power over the Alley. Murray Kaufman- Murray the K- was the former and Bob Crewe was the latter.

Both of these gentlemen were Jewish, as indeed most similar positions in the music business are, hence wishing to continue Jewish control over artists and repertoire - A&R in the business.

Clark’s assault on Alley dominance was just the opening volley. The years ’60- ’64 were quiescent perhaps giving false assurance of victory to the Alley. The next assault on the Alley was to begin, or was already in its birth throes about 1964 when the Beatles who wrote their own songs and published them dominated the airwaves hurt the Alley worse than Dick Clark. Remember at the Beatles’ peak four or five of the Top Ten were Beatles songs. Assuming those songs were played twice an hour at three minutes each 8 x 3 equals 24 minutes of non-Alley credits allowing for ads that means the Alley was virtually shut out of AM radio thus earning severely reduced royalties.

An assault requires a counter assault so any vulnerabilities in the Beatles armor had to be sought out. Brian Epstein, the Beatles’ manager was Jewish, indeed the Beatles would be surrounded by Jews siphoning off their riches, but I don’t think Epstein was a member of the synagogue while being quite protective of what was his. So, Epstein was in the way. He conveniently committed suicide, as… who knows: At this point the entire Beatles empire was up for grabs while the Beatles themselves had never been involved in the business aspects of their success and had no idea what to do. Who stepped in to turn their money green but two Jewish characters, Allen Klein and Leonard Epstein to divvy it up. Leonard Epstein went by the nom de guerre of Lee Eastman, Linda’s father. So, in the end the Jews got it back from the Beatles.

Another big factor in the demise of the Alley was the self-confessed assassin, Bob Dylan. Dylan claims full credit for the demise of the Alley but he exaggerates. His stuff which defies description as much as his hero’s, Little Richard, was certainly not acceptable to the Alley. His application being rejected, Bobby, one assumes, swore revenge. His major contribution was that his success encouraged the success of the singer-songwriters who were not of the Alley and a great many not of the Faith thus removing precious minutes of play time if not hours which obviated the need for roomsful of writers in the Alley putting them out of work. Carole King had to make her own records becoming a singer-songwriter.

By the time of Andrew’s story one imagines that the perceptive Bob Crewe was aware of the developing problem, at least from the incipient British Invasion. While I have always been familiar with the name of Bob Crewe it had little meaning to me. I thought he was just an arranger of orchestral versions of rock songs; in other words, cashing in. As Andrew explains he was a major songwriter of the fifties and sixties. Sixty to sixty-four are considered very fallow years in R&R and this period is when Crewe shown. Indeed, the music of the period so disgusted me that I refused to listen to Top 40 spending my time on the Country end of the dial. The period was the end of the Golden Age of Country. Well, what doesn’t die moves on.

It turns out that Crewe wrote all of that falsetto crap of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons with all its homosexual double entendres: Walk Like A Man, (Talk Like A Girl), my son.

Murray the K was one of the most important DJs in an age when DJs walked with the gods. He originally fastened himself on the Beatles like a barnacle on the bottom side of a ship, calling himself the Fifth Beatle. As Andrew says in this story he is attempting the same hoping to become the Sixth Rolling Stone. Murray went around in fifths and sixths.

Andrew’s description of Crewe’s digs at the Dakota Apartments in front of which John Lennon would be shot sixteen years later:

We grabbed some hasty victuals from the hot dog stand on the corner of Fifth, then cabbed west across the park and back into our own Holly Golightly world to attend a Bob Crewe party in our honor. The yellow stretch cab wheeled out of the park at 72nd across Central park West and let us out at the austere and majestic granite entrance to the Dakota. Three short 60s-filled years later, the building would become famous for housing Roman Polansky’s Rosemary’s Baby. Sixteen years on, it would become the site of the killing of John Lennon. Keith and I asked for ‘Bob Crewe, please.’ The rest of the Stones were already there. Bob’s apartment was a film set, all ornate and Roman gay splendour over the park - marbled floors, bronzed Ma Bell’s, African motif zebra and leopard throw rugs, and enough brocade tassel and gilt to assure you that you weren’t visiting John Huston. The living room was sunk down to a waist-high setting with an aqua-Nero motif, complete with statues of nubile youth that gushed water. Bob Crewe was Doris Day, if Doris Day had been all man and stayed gorgeous. Leonard Bernstein chatted with actor/neighbor Robert Ryan who asked Mick if he knew Terence Stamp who he’d worked with two years before in Billy Budd. Mick didn’t or wouldn’t. Lenny B. and Ryan turned away from Jagger and resumed discussing elevator problems at the Dakota. Bob Crewe was above it all and flying.

So you see what royalties and a few intellectual properties are worth. You could kill for them, at the very least, steal them. You can see what became available of the Beatles when Epstein committed ‘suicide’ and the value of the Jagger-Richards properties that Klein, Easton and Oldham- all Jews- stole. As mere artists the Stones are actually inconsequential, they are the mere raw material, the gold mine, to be exploited by the prospectors of pop. Thus Crewe’s confederate Murray the K cornered the key figure in the Stone’s organization, Andrew Loog Oldham, p. 16:

Sometime during the evening, Murray the K pulled me aside and put a 45 single between my hand and his. Murray stood out in these svelte surroundings, grey-blue straw titfer atop his hair replacement and ghastly tangerine skin. He was wearing a Cadillac upholstery colored Teflon sweater with winkle pickers that set off fuchsia flared trews that wouldn’t even pass for wallpaper in Slough. Murray had no shame but was master of his game…pop kingmaker.
He backed me against the wall, both of us still holding the 45, his free hand gripping my beige suede jacketed elbow. ‘Andy, I love the guys. I think they are fabulous. I know the Beatles love ‘em too- George told me so. I don’t go out of my way for many people y’know, but I’m promoting the hell out of them- you’re gonna sell tickets. The Stones are special. I really like them.’
This rotund puck of pop caught his breath and allowed me time to acknowledge this outpouring. ‘Murray they like you too’ was all I could muster.
‘They do?’ He came back at me smiling vices. ‘Great. I could feel it, especially Brian, real straight guy, sweetheart, really genuine, Mick too. Listen Andy, I don’t often do this and I promise you, forget whatever you’ve heard- I don’t want anything for it, I just love this business we’re in and that’s the truth of it. Don’t want no freebies, no B-sides.’
He paused and grinned- this was pure pop oxymoronic air we were breathing. ‘All I want,’ he continued, ‘is to know that whenever the guys play New york- and you will, often, I promise- you have ol’ Murray the K behind you, man you’re gonna be big…’ (The wonderful thing about America I somehow found time to think, is that you have nothing to do with getting there. Other people do it for you and you are merely beholding, beholding- left holding the bag.) Murray meanwhile droned on, ‘Anyway, all I want is that Murray here is the only disc jockey who MC’s your New York shows and-’ Murray pushed me further against the African motif’d wall- ‘and you and the guys remember Murray when those cocksuckers put me down…and they will, just you remember.’
America was turning into beads of sweat trickling from questionable hairlines and Paul Simon was still Tom of Tom and Jerry. I felt the vinyl, now it was all mine. ‘Feel what’s in your hand, Andy. It’s yours; it’s for you and the boys. Just take it and record it. I guarantee it. Murray guarantees it babe. I just gave you your very first American hit.’ He had, and God Bless America, land of a thousand dances. I’d just gone to the perfect party and got laid by the perfect partner, Murray the K. Bob Crewe beamed knowingly from the other side of the room and raised his glass in a welcome-to-the-good-ship-lollipop salute while musical guest Tiny Tim entertained guests with that and other ditties from another room.
The 45 was It’s All Over Now. It went to 30 US, the lower reaches of success. Not much of a pottage to sell your birthright for but you should catch the threat. So, what’s going on here? Remember you’re in a Jewish milieu on Jewish turf.

You’re standing in a magnificent Dakota apartment of 3 or 4,000 square feet. The apartment is expensively and magnificently appointed in an occult mysterioso manner in what may have been the center of New York Saturnian Satanism, more on that in its place. Crewe is in the bucks and he got there in 2 ½ cent bits. The power of intellectual properties x tens or hundreds of millions.

Over in a smaller room of the apartment Crewe is supporting the once successful British songwriter, Lionel Bart, also Jewish who has apparently fallen on hard times, perhaps wiped clean by Crewe as Andrew will be by Allen Klein.

The impression of great power is clear. As Crewe watches from the other side of the room Murray the K acting as his agent or, perhaps, stooge, has pinned Andrew to the wall at the same time wrapping their hands around a mysterious object.

Bob Crewe

Murray the K then lays out the terms on which he as the most powerful DJ in the most powerful break out market in the US, save Dick Clark, will allow the Rolling Stones to market themselves in NYC and hence the United States. All Murray’s negotiations were positive from his side although expressed in negatives. These are the items Murray wants in exchange for the Stones’ soul. Remember this apartment might actually be the apartment replicated in Rosemary’s Baby in which Satan was cradled. The movie was released after this incident but Andrew has already mentioned it so that this incident to him seemed like a scene in Rosemary’s Baby. He is conflating the two.

Murray says: The Stones are special. I really like them. In other words you’ve got our attention and we can see our way to make a bundle off you.

Murray says: He doesn’t want any freebies, no B sides. In other words that is exactly what he is asking for. The A side of a 45 is the hit side; the B side whose royalties are the same as the A side can by a throw away. Indeed, Andrew would make crowd noise a side just for the royalties. At this point the Stones are merely a cover band- they re-record other people’s records hence the B side Murray wants for his own publishing account is worth potentially tens of thousands of dollars. Hence, as we can plainly see Congress effectively put an end to ‘payola.’

Then Murray threatens that if they don’t they will never play NYC again and if they do they won’t get any help from his hand.

In addition Murray does demand the prestige of MCing the Stones shows. So essentially at this point he’s got the farm. He would become the Sixth Stone.

Then as Crewe beams approvingly from across the room Murray tells Andrew that the thing they’re holding onto is the next song the Stones are going to record (was that a command?) - publishing obviously going to Crewe while Murray guarantees that he will play it on his show.

Murray The K

Murray looks to Crewe and Crewe blesses the transaction by raising his glass. Of course this was written well after Andrew had seen Rosemary’s Baby so maybe he just portrayed the scene in that context with Crewe as Satan.

Andrew had no trouble catching the drift. He buckled or perhaps wisely acceded. The 45 was It’s All Over Now and it was the Stones next release and not much of a hit, reaching only thirty but indicating Andrew has caught the ball and would play the game. Andrew had his own counter attack however.
Andrew perhaps compared the Beatles as songwriters to the Stones as a copy band and got that point. On returning home he demanded that Mick and Keith begin writing their own songs. That would more or less place them beyond the reach of Crewe and his ilk. But then whose smiling face showed up in England? Allen Klein and there went the publishing until the next Stones counter attack.
If Andrew had just stayed off all those drugs.
The Stones loved the attitude and energy of New York; we’d walk it and we’d talk it. Andrew loved New York, too. It was a movie come true for him- the Brill Building and 1650 Broadway, running around from office to office listening to that Jewish rock ‘n’ roll coming out of New York. It all had that sweet sound. The Carole King sound, the music of Bob Crewe. It wasn’t ‘I see a red door and I want to paint it black.’ It was more up; it was pop.

You don’t really have to read between the lines to get that point but there is a lot between the lines too.

Changes

Would anybody like to try the changes I’m going through?

for huge collection of photos.

Life at best is difficult. Change after difficult change presents itself. Of necessity life is lived on the fly. One must always deal with fixtures and forces one cannot comprehend on first confrontation. In a way then we can hardly be responsible for the decisions we make unless we have enough experience to interpret that with which we are confronted correctly. At any point a controlling psychological fixation through misinterpretation may cause to act against our best interests. All further experience then will be interpreted through and disturbed by one or more fixations in our subconscious of which we probably are not aware.

Sexually Marianne was probably confused by the sexual scenes she observed at her father’s Braziers Institute contrasted with her subsequent teaching of abstinence at St. Joseph’s Convent School. The confusions conflicted her sexual attitudes in later life, attitudes she was unaware of and never resolved.

Once she left her father’s governance passing into that of her mother’s she lived not in poverty but in relative hardship; luxuries if experienced at all were few and far between yet she did received an upper class education and outlook at St. Joseph’s.

Her mother was apparently strongly Bohemian having been involved with the stage pre-WWII. She encouraged Marianne in the Bohemian direction which Marianne found congenial, sought and never abandoned. The girl was interested in the stage while becoming a Joan Baez style folk singer after leaving convent school in Reading at seventeen.

Young Marianne

While not beautiful in any classic sense she was yet attractive with a great figure making her a desirable sexual object. The sixties was the decade of wide open sex making all women mere sexual objects. Her first reaction was to seek a stable married life choosing John Dunbar as an appropriate husband. Dunbar was Bohemian in outlook while apparently headed for an academic career.

At this point fate intervened. At a party with Dunbar she met the record producer Andrew Loog Oldham who perceived her persona as a marketable commodity in the pop music world. As an added bonus Marianne could actually sing, having performed as a folk singer.

She was still an impressionable girl of just seventeen just after the Pill had been introduced with little ability to successfully traverse the changes she would be called upon to go through. These would be formidable and rapid calling for huge energy reserves on a day to day basis. Not an enviable situation.

While most musicians go through a relatively long learning process and struggle to succeed Marianne struck gold the first time out without even trying. Her first minimal three minute effort, if it was an effort, established her as the pop princess or queen of the generation. Her innocent convent school persona was perfect in a vulgar world. But it was a persona at odds with the one Marianne would seek and embrace- she became the devil with a blue dress on.

While the music or, really, record business seems very attractive from a distance it is literally vile from the inside. Everything connected with it is dishonest, the record companies, musicians, lackeys, the whole number. Nobody remains unstained.

It is truly a man’s world, even a gay man’s world, in which the men have no respect for womankind. Women are expected to merely service the sexual desires of the male performers. They have no use beyond that. Thus one has the phenomenally debauched groupie scene that amazed the world during the sixties. After that there was no longer anything amazing.

Having witnessed sex acts at Braziers of numerous descriptions the pop music world satisfied this side of Marianne’s psyche. At the same time a desire for a chaste life pushed her in the direction of marriage with Dunbar which desire she consummated, however Dunbar proved to be not the ideal choice.

While Marianne thought she would be leading a sedate intellectual academic life with him as a professor he turned out to be as much or more a Bohemian as she was. Quite frankly he failed her.

Having acquired a wife he did not act responsibly toward her. He was blindsided by her recording success and perhaps belittled by her financial success. In effect he was supported by his wife which is always a difficult situation. The changes he faced were in themselves formidable and he didn’t have the character to meet them. Still, a man doesn’t fill his house with dopers and heroin addicts. Marianne can hardly be faulted for resenting it after getting up in the morning to find a house full of conked out junkies in rooms littered with used needles. The transition from Braziers to St. Joseph’s to high degeneration must have been changes hard to adapt to. Sent her head spinning.

The change from the straitened circumstances of her childhood and youth still actually in progress to one of affluence in which she could indulge her wildest fancies in buying clothes and more clothes. Her lack of maturity hurt her badly. In this case her hero William Blake’s notion that the road of excess leads to wisdom was not quite true, it led to penury.

Not clearly seen by many at the time the pop world split into two streams, the British pop stream of the fifties soon to be extinct and the Rock world of pop princes and princesses of the future. The Beatles straddled both worlds while curiously Marianne may have been the first to emerge as a star of the Rock world soon to be followed by the Rolling Stones.

As such even though having only one hit single to her name she was on a par with the Beatles and the Stones while being superior to the lesser groups following in the train of the Beatles and Stones. Thus in the salon formed around the pop art dealer Robert Fraser she held a place of primacy that she never realized. Her tragedy was that she was too young and inexperienced to grasp her opportunity making a series of inept decisions while being seen only as so much poontang by the Rockers and of transitory fame by a series of inept managers.

Thus, unable to find someone capable of carefully building her career she did become transitory, or her career going into hiatus, she did lose her place while gravitating to the dominance of Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones. Gradually her royalties diminished so that she was financially dependent on Jagger while still married to John Dunbar. Deep in a milieu of drug users she found their allure irresistible.

However conscious she was that she had been and still was to some extent a celebrity she thought to regain that identity. Feeling unable to compete with Jagger as a recording star she chose to follow her mother’s wishes and take up acting. In her enthusiasm to and need to show Jagger that she was somebody too, that she was his equal, as a performing artist she aroused Jagger’s interest in also being a movie star. He, being a more marketable commodity soon gave evidence of eclipsing her as an actor rather than staying in recording as she assumed he would.

Her own space having been preempted she developed an affinity for Brian Jones of the Stones who was essentially in her situation in his relation to the group. He too was being forced out thereby losing his identity.

When Brian died she then in sympathy decided to follow him overdosing with pills that would have killed her had not Jagger been alert enough to rush her to the hospital. As much as anything her suicide attempt was meant to get away from Jagger’s dominance. That move now being thwarted she had no choice but to walk out which she did in 1970. Thus began the rest of her life.

II

The Rock and Art scene was a drug scene. Bob Fraser’s salon centered around Rock musicians was also a drug center. Fraser introduced members of his salon to all drugs including heroin. Marianne had a favored position in Fraser’s salon early learning of heroin to which Fraser himself was addicted. By the time she walked out on Jagger in 1970 she had been addicted for some time. Heroin was to remain her central fixation throughout her life.

Jagger disapproved of her addiction so she was forced to conceal it from him. When her royalties decreased she no longer had her own money becoming dependent on Jagger. Not wishing to plead for large sums of money from Jagger in order to obtain her heroin she prostituted herself to Keith Richard’s factotum Spanish Tony Sanchez.

Sanchez was an aspiring criminal who came to Richards through Groovy Bob Fraser. Sanchez had met Fraser in a bar after which the friendship blossomed. Fraser had contracted gambling debts to the notorious Kray Brothers, the criminal kingpins of London. The Krays were threatening Fraser with grievous bodily harm if they didn’t get their money. According to Sanchez in his autos Up And Down With The Rollings Stones and I was Keith Richard’s Drug Dealer he volunteered to negotiate the debt with the Krays which he did.

At that time, following their US Mafia model, the Krays were attempting to lift the Beatles from Brian Epstein who also had large gambling debts to them so there is no reason to disbelieve Sanchez. Following the episode with Fraser Sanchez was employed by Richards as drug/procurer-factotum at the fabulous salary of two hundred fifty pounds a week. This leads me to believe that the Krays were using Sanchez to infiltrate the Stones possibly with the intent of taking them over.

Sanchez was always resented by Richards and the Stones but he managed to stick with them until the mid seventies when Richards was able to shake him. In his vanity Sanchez considered himself an essential member of the Stones’ entourage, if not an actual member of the Stones.

Marianne’s misfortune was that everyone wanted to sleep with her, a further misfortune was that she obliged. Thus she and Tony had a sexual liaison for several years. This raises the question then whether Tony was also pimping for her. Certainly as his criminal associates knew he was sleeping with her they would want to also. Not being a fool Tony may have named a price and received it. Whether he or she could have successfully resisted is open to question. The US Mafia certainly used their female artists to gratify their desires.

In the mid sixties additionally, once again, through Fraser Marianne had become part of the Satanic crowd. Through Fraser she was introduced to the arch US Satanist, Kenneth Anger. Through them she was introduced to the writing of Great Satanist of the twentieth century, Aleister Crowley and also the writing of the nineteenth century French arch Satanist, Eliphas Levi, not Jewish despite the name. And then the modern Satanist classic the Russian Bulgakov’s The Master And Margarita published in 1968.

Also in this period she became involved with the Satanist Process Church Of The Final Judgment. Marianne downplays her involvement with Satanism but it was much more serious than she is willing to admit.

Playing against this background Marianne renewed an acquaintance with the Irishman Lord Patrick Rossmore. He was 43 to her 24. I merely mention this, it makes me no never mind what the ages are so long as the couple is comfortable with each other. In this case they weren’t comfortable. The two, in a sort of a farce became engaged but never married parting as they met in a friendly sort of way within several months.

While Mick was aggressively dominating, Marianne seems to have chosen Lord Rossmore because shy and retiring as he was she could dominate him. According to Hodkinson the couple rarely saw each other, he being in Ireland while Marianne remained in London closer to her dope supply.

True to her interpretation of William S. Burroughs degenerate novel, Naked Lunch, she led a totally debased and degraded life as a street junkie or, at least, her version of it. Remember it was her movie of Marianne and she was pretending to be a sociologist. She cultivated the friendship of total degenerates such as the artists Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud. She also became friends with the total junkie, writer Alexander Trocchi. Also at this time becoming fast friends with another lowlife, Henrietta Moraes who she says was a close friend until she died. Marianne was able to sink to lower levels than any of these people and gloried in it.

It was during this period of 1970-71 that she says she sat on the wall in Soho staring into the bomb crater. In his first biography Hodkinson scoffed at this. According to him this wall was a waiting station lined with junkies alert for their supply.

By 1971 the Stones had become tax exiles in the South of France so that Spanish Tony was with Keith no longer able to supply Marianne with her drugs, thus, we suppose, the wall. As Marianne had no regular income during this period, although adequate royalty checks still arrived irregularly, there does arise the question of how she paid for her dope. As a junkie Marianne had no qualms about running up tabs she couldn’t pay and apparently didn’t. At one point she boasts she left New York owing several dealers 20K each while flippantly adding she had no intention of ever paying. Whether she succeeded or not is not known.

Marianne vehemently denies that she resorted to prostitution although there is a fair amount of circumstantial evidence she did. A careful reading of her second auto, Memories, Dreams And Reflections, gives some hints. At one point she retorts to an admirer that she is not a two-bit prostitute, that it would take 200 pounds to be with her. Perhaps a joke but the price sounds right, her retort has the ring of authenticity.

In the same auto she claims first hand acquaintance with all the working girls of the area. There is only one way such first hand knowledge could be obtained. There is or was a video on the internet in which a camera had been placed within a building between two half open doors. Marianne dressed in some pretty snappy expensive looking working girl gear walks in front of the camera, notices it, shows alarm, then quickly turns a corner then flattening herself against the wall to peer back at the camera. It seems evident that she was going to or returning from a job.

She seems to have worked from 1970-71 through at least 1974 through her association with Madeleine D’Arcy. In 1971- during the recording of Exile On Main Street when Tony Sanchez accompanied Keith to the South of France Tony met Madeleine with whom he fell deeply in love and had a relationship with her in France.

Upon returning to England he apparently resumed some sort of relationship with Marianne as well as Madeleine. Marianne in her turn began a lesbian relationship with Madeleine, perhaps to spite Tony, who she despised personally, or so she says. Tony was angry at the relationship.

It then appears that Marianne and Madeleine functioned as high price prostitutes or perhaps call girls between ‘72 to ‘74. In ‘74 Madeleine as Marianne recalls had gone back to turning fifteen pound tricks in Brighton. ’Going back’ implies that formerly she received higher payouts, perhaps 200+ as Marianne received.

As she hadn’t heard from Madeleine for a little while she called at her apartment. When no one answered she called a couple bravos to break down the door. One was a Maltese pimp and drug dealer. At that time in London the Maltese are said to have controlled crime in the West End. That Marianne could call on them to supply help implies a certain degree of familiarity with the underworld. The other person’s identity Marianne doesn’t indicate so there is the possibility it could have been Tony. When no one answered the door the two men broke it down.

Entering the apartment Madeleine was found dead on her bed. She had apparently been beaten to death although not molested as she was artfully laid out in a beautiful full gown. Thus whoever killed her loved her. This points to Tony although the crime was never solved.

So, if Marianne says she never turned to prostitution perhaps not, but there is sufficient evidence to indicate she did. The whole period from 1970-1974 is very hazy in her memoirs.

While she was supposedly incognito on the streets of Soho, as if Marianne could ever be incognito, lost to view of the music world, Michael Leander, who had been her producer suddenly got the idea to make an LP with her so he beat the bushes, scoured the walls so to speak, like any good detective, tracking her down in Soho supposedly sitting on her wall staring into the bomb pit. He induced her back into the studio where they recorded the LP Rich Kid Blues, a return to Marianne’s folk roots.

For some reason the record was shelved not being released until decades later. After this she took up with Oliver Musker who she was associated with for the two years from ’72 to ’74.

The Myth Of Marianne

Marianne & Teddy 1974

For all her emotional problems Marianne was a bright girl. She read. Among her readings were those of the psychologist C.G. Jung. Among Jung’s ideas was that of the personal myth. By that he means everyone must have a personal myth to survive, to make sense of what one is doing or what is happening to you. This was more or less the same notion of Andy Warhol’s that if you don’t like the way your life is going pretend it’s a movie. That’s a sort of displacement so what’s happening is just a script that was written for you. Your own personal myth. Lots of people were living in their own movie.

It seems probable, in observing Marianne’s life, that she came across Jung’s observation and set about creating her myth. For proper understanding I quote Jung: p. 197 of the Red Book as quoted in the introduction by Sonu Shamdesani:

I was driven to ask myself in all seriousness: “what is the myth you are living?” I found no answer to the question and had to admit that I was not living with a myth, but rather in an uncertain cloud of theoretical possibilities which I was beginning to regard with increasing distrust…

So in the most natural way, I took on myself to know “my” myth-- so I told myself-- how could I, when treating my patients, make due allowance for the personal factor, for my personal equation, which is yet so necessary for a knowledge of the other person, if I was unconscious of it.”

Edgar Rice Burroughs And The Revolt Against Civilization

Edgar Rice Burroughs And The Revolt Against Civilization

A Review Of

Lothrop Stoddard’s 1922 Eponymous Title

by

R.E. Prindle

Stoddard, Lothrop: The Revolt Against Civilization: The Menace Of The Underman, 1922, New York, Charles Scribner’s Sons, First Edition.

Lothrop Stoddard
In the name of our To-morrow we will burn Rafael
Destroy museums, crush the flowers of art,
Maidens in the radiant kingdom of the Future
Will be more beautiful than Venus de Milo.

Quoted by Stoddard p. 202

A perennial problem in Burroughs’ studies is what did he believe? Was he a racist? Was he an anti-Semite? Was he an irredeemable bigot? Shall we just say he was not of a contemporary Liberal frame of mind. If you listen to Richard Slotkin author of Gunfighter Nation and a professor at Case Western Reserve at the time he wrote his book a couple decades ago, Edgar Rice Burroughs was an evil man responsible for all the evil in the US from 1912 to the present. Slotkin even sees him responsible for the My Lai massacre of Viet Nam.

Richard Slotkin

Himself a Communist Slotkin can overlook all the crimes of the Soviet Union in which tens of millions were exterminated to find the ultimate evil in the killing of a few dozen people in Viet Nam.

Slotkin, who rampages through his history disparaging any non-Liberal writers as atavistic bigots firmly attaches Burroughs’ name to two scholars, Madison Grant and his Passing Of The Great Race of 1916 and Lothrop Stoddard and his historical studies of the twenties. He considers the two hardly less evil than Burroughs. To someone less excitable, perhaps, or lessLiberal, the two writers have written responsible and astute studies. I certainly think they have.

When I first read Slotkin I rejected the notion that Burroughs had been influenced by either. Ten years on I have to retract that opinion. It is now clear that Burroughs read both while being heavily influenced by Lothrop Stoddard, especially his 1922 volume, The Revolt Against Civilization. While the studies of both Grant and Stoddard would at best supplement Burroughs already developed opinions The Revolt can easily be seen as a template for Burroughs’ writing after he read it. While the study complemented his own developed social and political opinions I am sure that Stoddard’s explication of the history provided Burroughs with many new facts. Based on its opinions that appeared in ERB’s novels I would place the reading somewhere about 1926 or 1927.

Edgar Rice Burroughs

Contrary to what some admirers want to make him ERB was what today would be considered a very conservative man, today’s Liberals would be anathema to him. He was decidedly anti-Communist, a Eugenicist, while not bigoted he was not a Negrophile or Semitophile. He was essentially a man with a social and historical outlook that was formed before 1900, a pre-immigration outlook formed while the Indian wars were still in progress. In short he was a man of his times.

Thomas Dixon Jr. to whom he is often compared was one of the most successful writers of the period who carefully examined both the Civil War and Reconstruction as well as the growing Socialist/Communist movement. He was not a bigot as he is always construed but a man of his own people. Burroughs was influenced by his work and thought well of him. He did not abhor him. ERB read many of Dixon’s novels and admired the movie based on his books, The Birth Of A Nation. He sympathized with Henry Ford in his struggle for the welfare of America and read the Dearborn Independent, Ford’s newspaper. In short, Burroughs was a stand up guy.

Now, what evidence is there he read The Revolt Against Civilization: The Menace Of The Underman? Let’s begin with this quote, p. 34 et seq.

Down to that time the exact nature of the life process remained a mystery. The mystery has now been cleared up. The researches of [August] Weisman and other modern biologists have revealed the fact that all living beings are due to a continuous stream of germ plasm which has existed ever since life first appeared on earth and which will continue to exist as long as any life remains. This germ-plasm consists of minute germ cells which have the power of developing into human living beings. All human beings spring from the union of a male sperm-cell and a female egg-cell. Right here, however, occurs the basic feature of the life process. The new individual consists, from the start, of two sorts of plasm. Almost the whole of him is body plasm - the ever multiplying cells which differentiate into the organs of the body. But he also contains germ- plasm. At his very conception a tiny bit of the life stuff from which he springs is set aside or carefully isolated from the body-plasm, and forms a course of development entirely its own. In fact, the germ-plasm is not really part of the individual; he is merely its bearer, destined to pass it on to other bearers of the life chain.

Now all this was not only unknown but even unsuspected down to a short time ago. Its discovery was in fact dependent upon modern scientific methods. Certainly, it was not likely to suggest itself to even the most philosophic mind. Thus, down to a generation ago, the life stuff was supposed to be a product of the body, not differing essentially in character from other body products. This assumption had two important consequences. In the first place, it tended to obscure the very concept of heredity, and led men to think of environment as virtually all important; in the second place, even where the importance of heredity was dimly perceived the role of the individual was misunderstood, and he was conceived as a creator rather than a mere transmitter. This was the reason for the false theory of “the inheritance of acquired characteristics,” formulated by Lamarck and upheld by most scientists until almost the end of the nineteenth century. Of course, Lamarckianism was merely a modification of the traditional ‘environmentalist’ attitude: it admitted that heredity possessed some importance, but it maintained environment as the basic feature

Now there you have the argument of God in Tarzan And The Lion Man of 1933 nearly word for word. I hink it unlikely that ERB actually read Weisman who published following 1900 and who ERB may never have heard of, so his source was in all probability Stoddard.

Stoddard’s presentation nicely straddles the change of consciousness from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. It sounds a trifle naïve to our ears but was cutting edge at the time. Weisman’s theories were a big step in the direction of the discovery of DNA a short 26 years after Stoddard’s study.

It is important though to remember that more than fifty percent of the US population today rejects the concept of evolution while being more Lamarckian in outlook than might be supposed. We are as a whole not quite as advanced as we think we are.

As a quick affirmation of the influence of Stoddard on ERB on pages 95-96 he gives an account of the famous Jukes family of degenerates that appeared in ERB’s 1932 novelette, Pirate Blood.

Stoddard was well aware of what was happening historically and presently and one can see that he passed that understanding on to ERB. Almost as though writing today, on page 237 Stoddard writes:

Stressful transition is the key-note of our times. Unless all signs be faulty, we stand at one of those momentous crises in history when mankind moves from one well-marked epoch to another of widely different character.

Extremely prescient observation in 1922 while his study has been borne out in detail. The chapter titles give a clear outline of the contents:

1. The Burden Of Civilization

2. The Iron Law Of Equality

3. The Nemesis Of The Inferior

4. The Lure Of The Primitive

5. The Ground Swell Of Revolt

6. The Rebellion Of The Underman

7. The War Against Chaos

8. Neo-Aristocracy

As can be easily seen novelists such as Rider Haggard, ERB, Edgar Wallace as well as many others from 1890 to the 20s were grappling with the problems indicated by the chapter titles.

The natural tendency in humans is to be rather lax in mental activity. Precision calls for an active mentality and concentration. Not everyone is capable of this, yet, beginning in the nineteenth century such mental qualities were increasingly necessary. Such disciplines as Chemistry and Physics didn’t allow for personal vagaries or individual style. One couldn’t bend the disciplines to one’s own desires, precise measurements were necessary requiring mental concentration. A little bit off and who knows what might happen. In a way then the Overman and Underman were created. Either you could or you couldn’t and if you couldn’t you slipped beneath- an Underman. Higher civilization was impossible for you.

Burroughs addressed this problem continually. In his character Tarzan he resolved the problem giving his creation a split personality, in a loin cloth he was one man, in a tuxedo he was another. Two separate gorillas in one and always a beast. In real life society split into two possibilities- the Over and Underman.

Worse still scientific methods were able to measure the ineffable, the unseen. In chemistry sub-tiny atoms were able to be detected and their sub-miniscule weights actually measured. Measurement is the bane of the Underman. A Mole contains 6,022 x 10 to the 23rd power of atoms, an incredible incomprehensible number that still might weigh 12 grams or less. Astonishing. Beyond the comprehension hence belief of the Underman. As the process can’t be seen it can’t be believed.

In human intelligence the Englishman Francis Galton began to devise measuring devices of intelligence in 1865 shortly after Darwin announced Evolution in 1959. Thus uncertainty about mental capacity was eliminated. As Stoddard calls it, The Iron Law Of Inferiority. Biology and measuring excluded something like eighty-five percent of the population from the ranks of the most intelligent. Without that high measurement of intelligence 85% of the population was automatically excluded from the possibility of higher attainment while at the same time being prejudged.

Big strapping fellows, all man, were relegated to manual labor while wimps like perhaps, John D. Rockefeller, became billionaires. Not right, the big strapping fellows said, but not measuring up in intelligence, which they couldn’t see, they were condemned to the shovel for life.

Intelligence measuring tests were improved between 1865 and 1920 although not as accurate as could be desired. Men entering the armed forces in WWI were an excellent testing group. Of 1,700,000 tested intelligence levels were fairly accurately determined. It was then discovered that only four and a half percent were very bright with another seven or eight percent bright, while the huge bulk were C+ to C- descending from there.

One imagines Burroughs read this with extreme thoughtfulness.

So, now as the bulk of the good things were going to those who could do, what were those who couldn’t do about it? The great issue since 1789 has been equality; the Underman demanded equality as a first condition. He could organize. He could sabotage. He could rage. And that is what the Underman has done.

The Communist Party was formed. And what was their chief demand? Equality. Absolute equality. As they couldn’t rise to a natural equality then the only other feasible solution was to bring the Superior intelligences down to their level. Thus they raged against that great equalizer, education. Screw science, screw physics, screw chemistry, screw biology. Who needed what you couldn’t see and that especially included intelligence measuring?

One of ERB’s bete noires was the I.W.W.- The Industrial Workers Of The World, syndicalists. Imagine his reaction when he read this:

Viewed in the abstract, technical sense, Syndicalism does not seem to present any specially startling innovations. It is when we examine the Syndicalists’ animating spirit, their general philosophy of life, and the manner which they propose to obtain their ends, that we realize we are in the presence of an ominous novelty,- the mature philosophy of the Under Man. This philosophy of the Under-Man is today called Bolshevism. Before the Russian Revolution it was known as Syndicalism. But Bolshevism and Syndicalism are basically one and the same thing. Soviet Russia has really invented nothing. It is merely practicing what others had been preaching for years- with such adaptation as normally attend the putting of theory into practice.

Syndicalism, as an organized movement, is primarily the work of two Frenchmen, Fernand Pelloutier and Georges Sorel. Of course, just as there were Socialist before Marx, so there were Syndicalists before Sorel. Syndicalism’s intellectual progenitor was Proudhon, who in his writings had closely sketched out the Syndicalist theory. As for Syndicalism’s savage, violent, uncompromising spirit, it is clearly Anarchist in origin., drawing its inspiration not only from Proudhon but also from Bakunin, [Johann] Most, and all the rest of that furious company of revolt.

“Revolt!” This is the essence of Syndicalism: a revolt, not merely against modern society but against Marxian Socialism as well. And the revolt was well timed. When, at the very end of the nineteenth century, Georges Sorel lifted the red banner of Syndicalism, the hour awaited the man. The proletarian world was full of discordant and disillusionment at the long dormant Marxian philosophy. Half a century had passed since Marx first preached his gospel, and the revolutionary millennium was nowhere in sight. Society had not become a world of billionaires and beggars. The great capitalists had not swallowed all. The middle classes still survived and prospered. Worst of all, from the revolutionary viewpoint, the upper grades of the working classes had prospered, too. The skilled workers were, in fact, becoming an aristocracy of labor. They were acquiring property and thus growing capitalistic; they were raising their living standards and thus growing bourgeois. Society seemed endowed with a strange vitality! It was even reforming many of the abuses which Marx had pronounced incurable. When, then, was the proletariat to inherit the earth?

The Proletariat! That was the key word. The van, and even the main body of society, might be fairly on the march, but behind lagged a rear guard. Here, were, first of all, the lower working class strata- the “manual” laborers in the narrower sense, relatively ill paid and often grievously exploited. Behind these again came a motley crew, the rejects and misfits of society. “Casuals” and “unemployables”, “down-and-outs” and declasses, victims of social evils, victims of bad heredity and their own vices, paupers, defectives, degenerates, and criminals- they were all there. They were there for many reasons, but they were all miserable, and they were all bound together by a certain solidarity- a sullen hatred of the civilization from which they had little to hope. To these people evolutionary, “reformist” socialism was cold comfort. Then came the Syndicalists promising, not evolution but revolution; not in the dim future but the here and now; not a bloodless “taking over” by “the workers” hypothetically stretched to include virtually the whole community, but the bloody “dictatorship” of The Proletariat in its narrow revolutionary sense.

Here, at last, was living hope- hope, and the prospect of revenge! Is it then strange that a few short years should have seen revolutionary Socialists, Anarchists, all the anti-social forces of the whole world grouped under the banner of Georges Sorel? For a time they went under different names syndicalists in France, Bolshevists in Russia, I.W.W.s in America but in reality they formed one army, enlisted in a single war.

Now, what was this war? It was, first of all, a war for the conquest of Socialism as a preliminary to the conquest of society. Everywhere the orthodox Socialist parties were fiercely assailed. And these Socialist assaults were formidable, because the orthodox Socialists possessed no moral line of defense. Their arms were palsied by the virus of their revolutionary tradition. For however evolutionary and non-militant the Socialists might have been in practice, in theory they had remained revolutionary their ethics continuing to be those of the “class war”, the destruction of the “possessing classes” and the “dictatorship of the proletariat.”

The American economist, Carver, will describe the ethics of socialism in the following lines: “Marxian Socialism has nothing in common with idealistic Socialism. It rests not on persuasion, but on force. It does not profess to believe, as did the old idealists, that if socialism be lifted up it will draw all men to it. In fact, it has no ideals; it is materialistic and militant. Being materialistic and atheistic, it makes no use of such terms as right and justice, unless it be to quiet the consciences of those who still harbor such superstitions. It insists that these terms are mere conventionalities; the concepts mere bugaboos invented by the ruling caste to keep the masses under control. Except in a conventional sense, from this crude materialistic view there is neither a right or wrong, justice nor injustice, good or bad. Until people who still believe in such silly notions divest their minds of them they will never understand the first principles of Marxian socialism.

“Who creates our ideas of right and wrong?” asks the Socialist. “The ruling class. Why? To insure their domination over the masses by depriving them of the power to think for themselves. We, the proletarians, when we get into power, will dominate the situation; we shall be the ruling class; we shall determine who is right and wrong. Do you ask us if what we propose is just? What do you mean by justice? Do you ask if it is right? What do you mean by right? It will be good for us. That is all that right and justice ever did or ever can mean!

People ask what Burroughs believed? Was he a racist? Was he an anti-Semite? Well, Burroughs’ beliefs can be extrapolated from the above quote as well as Stoddard’s whole book. If Burroughs could have expressed himself concisely he would have written The Revolt Against Civilization. You don’t have to look any further.

There could be no more ardent anti-Communist, anti-Socialist, anti-IWW than ERB. The book was published five years after the Russian Revolution, a mere three years after the narrow quelling of the Communist disturbances of 1919 while in 1922 the Harding administration was putting the finishing touches on the suppression of that Communist revolution in the US. Make no mistake the crimes of 1919 were part of an American Bolshevik revolution. Things would not return to what Harding called normalcy but it would be a reasonable facsimile that would endure until the engineered great crash of 1929 opening the way for the Communist revolution of FDR in the US.

These were perilous times ERB was living in no less than those of today. One can’t be sure when Burroughs read Revolt but many of the same themes almost in quotation were employed in his 1926 novel The Moon Maiden. And from the Moon Maiden he went to the more sophisticated approaches of his great political novels from Tarzan At The Earth’s Core to Tarzan And The Lion Man.

As Stoddard thinks the Underman breeds at a very fast rate while the Overman limits his family the obvious consequence is that people of intelligence decrease rapidly in relation to the Underman. Of course Stoddard has all kinds of tables and charts to prove his point. As this was published in 1922 the results are heavily skewed to prove the English are the top of the heap; a result not uncongenial to Burroughs’ sensibilities.

One imagines that as of induction time in 1917-18 a great many of the recent immigrants at least had underdeveloped English language skills that affected the results but at this point it no longer matters; the general idea has been proved sound.

As we have a war between the Underman and the Overman and make no mistake, as far as Sorel and the Syndicalist/Bolshevik ideology goes it is a war to the knife, it may be asked what Stoddard’s formula for the Overman’s success might be.

This returns us to the Underman’s great fear that science, that is objective analysis supported by an array of facts will condemn him to the virtual condition of servitude. It might be surmised that this is an intolerable but inescapable conclusion unless education and science are destroyed reducing the more intelligent to the masses.

Stoddard then relying on Darwinian and Weismanian evolution and the notion of Eugenics introduced by Francis Galston resolves the problem by ending the reproduction of the ‘defective’ classes, that is, forced sterilization. Forced sterilization was actually employed. It is interesting that he never brings in the issue of race thus on the surface his book is neither racist for anti-Semitic. However as the book assumes that the superior intelligences are English or Nordic the text qualifies as anti-Semitic in Jewish eyes and hence has been placed on the Jewish Index Of Forbidden Literature.

One may be horrified at the Eugenic solution to the intelligence problem but one must be equally horrified at the Underman solution to their Overman problem. Liquidation is more horrifying than sterilization and Liquidation was employed by the Underman in Russia and will be employed again if they can consolidate their gains in the US and Europe today.

The problem is that while being founded in reality it is impossible in execution. The human mind is too subjective to be trusted with such a great responsibility. Many statues were placed on the books commanding forced sterilization and many such were executed.

Schools classes were organized based on supposed mental aptitudes. How objectively I will demonstrate by my own example. Until Jr. High in my home town schools did not systematically differentiate based on mental capacity, however at the end of the ninth grade just before I.Q. testing in the tenth there were three options, Trade School for those deemed not of academic ability, in other words destined for the labor force, and once in high school a division between business, that is white collar, and college prep. This was still a process of self-selection thus I signed up for high school however someone changed my papers to trade school.

Thus when I showed for classes at high school, I was told I was enrolled at trade school. Now, this was the fight of my life, and for it. I was told I was in trade school and to get out. I said I wasn’t leaving and sat down where I waited for four days for the situation to resolve itself. My argument was that the law required that I be given an education and it wouldn’t be at trade school. Whatever the behind the scenes machinations were I was reluctantly allowed to enter but they then insisted it would be business level while I demanded college prep. With an unexplained prescience I was told that I would never go to college so I should be in business. Nevertheless I won that struggle too.

I am sure that if enforced sterilization had been possible at the time I would have been compelled to undergo it.

Now, here’s the kicker. Came time for I.Q. tests and I placed in the upper four percent. I have no idea what the reaction to that was although my critics had to tone down their act. So human passions invalidated the whole Eugenic idea.

In other words there is no equable solution to this terrible human dilemma.

In that sense the solution offered by Aldus Huxley in his famous comic novel Brave New World is of some interest. In Huxley’s story he enlists science, chemistry, to produce different levels of mental competence. The zygote is nurtured in test tubes while at certain levels of development certain chemicals are introduced limiting the development of the fetus. Thus the labor problem is solved by creating classes only capable of menial tasks. The upper classes are bred like race horses to various degrees of excellence. Huxley was tongue in cheek to be sure but, actually the only solution to this otherwise insoluble problem.

Stoddard didn’t introduce any ideas to which Burroughs wasn’t already familiar and in agreement. At best Stoddard’s superb research and explication clarified ERB’s understanding for him. I don’t know how familiar he was with Georges Sorel. Today Sorel is unknown except to specialists although I am beginning to see his name pop up so with the Communist regime of Barack Obama perhaps the way is being prepared for Sorel’s extreme measures of exterminating the Overman.

At any rate I have come to the opinion that Richard Slotkin is correct in thinking the Burroughs had read and was in accord with both Madison Grant and Lothrop Stoddard. However Slotkin evaluates their work through the distortion of his own Communistic lens which is only valid to those of his point of view.

His view does not make Burroughs a racist or anti-Semite. It makes him an objective and accurate observer and analyst of the situation of his time. As indicated above Burroughs absorbed Stoddard’s information, that point of view and used it to create his wonderful works of the late twenties and first half of the thirties. If one bears Stoddard’s book in mind while reading those novels it will make them make great sense while presenting his view of the political and social situation

Of course the novels are not confined solely to dealing with these issues; Burroughs had a much more far ranging mind, both subjectively and objectively.

Stoddard’s The Revolt Against Civilization is a major study as relevant today as the day it was written. The last ninety years have only borne out his theses. The Revolt Against Civilization is well worth a read, perhaps two. At any rate you will have an accurate idea of Burroughs’ social and political beliefs.

Da Boyz From New York City

Da Boyz From New York City
by

R.E. Prindle

De Blasio cleared the first hurdle on his run for the mayor of New York City with room to spare. There is little doubt that come November he will be the mayor elect. Then watch out.

I’ve been reading Mahler’s The Bronx Is Burning and Jonnes’ South Bronx Rising. The lesson to be learned from those two books is that when De Blasio takes his oath New York City will go into dissolution, total meltdown.

The stage is set today as it was in the late sixties and early seventies when all social cohesion dissolved in the Bronx and that city was left looking like Dresden after the firestorm. That was no small thing, The Bronx had a population about as large as Detroit had in 1950 while the destruction was even more devastating.

Thus at the 1977 World Series as the flames of the Bronx licked the sky over the rim of Yankee Stadium Howard Cosell is reputed to have said: Ladies and gentlemen; The Bronx is burning.

While myriads of reasons are given as a cause the reason is simple: too much low quality diversity. It was a racial thang.

As Jonnes points out the city bred Negroes were swamped by illiterate Southern dirt farmers who brought their rural values with them. The Negro city culture was destroyed and now it is the turn of the rest of the city. Overflowing Harlem the Negroes, or some of them, moved North to the Bronx.

At the same time, after WWII, some enterprising ex-airmen bought surplus Army planes and began ferrying Puerto Ricans from the island to New York. Thus by the sixties somewhere between a half million and a million mainly illiterate non-English speaking Puerto Ricans were also crowding into the Bronx.

The two large populations between one and two million strong displaced the former immigrants while being outside the influence of Bronx government and unfamiliar with US law and society. The result was inevitable. All cohesion was dissolved and things just fell apart. Thus The Bronx preceded Detroit.

Meanwhile in Brooklyn the district of Bushwick was being changed to Negro. In the blackout of 1977 all hell broke loose and the Negroes looted and burned Bushwick.

The city is now poised waiting for the break loose moment. Prognostication is a tough business as any weatherman can tell you but even they get right once in a while.

Putting on my seers cap, and I hope I’m wrong, New York City will all but disappear when De Blasio enfranchises the Negroes as is his promise. Salisbury and Johannesburg will look pristine in comparison. One more of the vanishing cities of the globe. One of De Blasio’s campaign songs is This City Belongs To Us.

Watch out for the Boyz from New York City New Yorkers. They’re coming for you. Property values will drop like you’ve never seen before.

Henry Ford And Louis Marshall

Henry Ford And Louis Marshall

In 1920-21 Henry Ford bought the Dearborn Independent and began a series of articles describing the machinations of what he called the International Jew or in other words, The International Jewish Conspiracy.
He was immediately leaped on and derided by a coalition of Jewish organizations orchestrated by the President of the American Jewish Committee, Louis Marshall.  Mr. Marshall derided Ford as a deluded, demented, paranoid anti-Semite.  Yet in a letter to New York State Senator Henry W. Pollack dated February 11, 1911 Mr. Marshall describes just such an organization.  Of course in doublespeak he makes it sound like an admirable organization.  Read this quotation carefully:  pp. 28-29.
The American Jewish Committee was organized some five years ago (1906) immediately after the massacres at Kischineff, Odessa and other localities in Russia, for the purpose of establishing a medium whereby the Jews of America might come to the assistance of their suffering brethren in other parts of the world.  On previous occasions when prompt action was necessary, it was found that there was no existing organization which was capable of grappling with the situations.  Almost simultaneously with these shocking occurrences in Russia, there were similar outbreaks in Roumania and Morrocco, which resulted in indescribable suffering to the Jews.  Shortly thereafter there followed a serious conflagration in the Jewish quarter of Constantinople; (Istanbul) the San Francisco earthquake, which destroyed practically all the Jewish houses of worship, and a famine, from which the Jews suffered in Persia.  These are only a few of the instances…
As can plainly be seen Mr. Marshall was describing an international organization solely for the benefit of the Jews although those same Jews claimed to be loyal citizens of their respective countries.  The sufferings of the Jews is his primary and only concern.  It is only their relief that he cares about, the rest can go to Hades as far as he is concerned.
To obtain money for this relief a virtual tax was placed on all Americans through the criminal control of the clothing and foodstuffs industries administered by men who the authorities considered arch criminals, Arnold Rothstein, Lepke Buchalter,  but who to the Jewish organization were agents and to the Jewish people heroes.
Ford’s articles in the Independent exposed these machinations.  It was therefore necessary for Mr. Marshall to denounce, vilify and discredit him, to render his voice null.  Mr. Marshall was successful in this effort.

A Review Of The Jewish Virtual Library Post ‘Henry Ford
Invents a Jewish Conspiracy’

Jews should always avoid writing on history. Because of their extreme ethnic bias they can produce only the most self serving twaddle. This is no more evident than in their Jewish Virtual Library post concerning Henry Ford. The mere title of the post expresses its falsification of history. Ford neither invented a Jewish conspiracy nor the International Jewish Conspiracy. In the course of events he was swept up into the Jewish War against Europeans much against his wishes.

The JVL isn’t even capable of putting Ford and the auto industry into a historical context without which Ford’s actions cannot be understood. Among the many battle events that appeared after 1900 was that of the bankers versus modern industry. There were of course Aryan banking firms and Jewish banking firms, at the time quite distinct from each other and in competition on an ethnic basis.

The railroad industry had dominated the banker’s attention in the nineteenth century thus they pooh poohed and disparaged new industries such as that of autos.

Both Jewish and Aryan banking firms refused to loan to the auto makers so the makers in turn developed new methods that freed them from dependence on loans from bankers while still allowing them to develop rapidly without interference from bankers. The two stellar auto makers were Henry Ford at Ford Motors and William C. Durant at Buick. Durant, perhaps the most imaginative auto genius but an inveterate over reacher attempted to gather the most prominent auto makers into a combine he called General Motors with which Ford initially flirted.

William Crapo Durant- Billy Durant
The Founder Of The Former
General Motors

Now after 1910 when autos seemed to be a permanent fixture and Durant overextended himself the bankers moved in and pushed Durant out. Now as several recent bailouts attest bankers don’t even know how to run banks much less than an auto company in the teens. Under the bankers Buick stood still while Ford shot ahead. Durant regrouped using the auto of Louis Chevrolet to reenter the field while using its success to recapture Buick and regenerate General Motors.

Ever expansive he once again overextended himself being forced out once more. This time the bankers installed an auto maker management that made GM a success capable of challenging and surpassing Ford.

While this was going on WWI was being fought. Woodrow Wilson then president was a socialist so that when the US entered the war in 1917 the government seized either control or direction of industry. The rails were nationalized while industry in general fell under government controls administered by an agency called the War Industries Board, the WIB.

One of Ford’s supposed faults according to the JVL was that he was opposed to government regulation of business. True, but so were all industrialists and such opposition could only be considered a fault by Communists qua socialists. The WIB was the agent of that regulation.

Now, whether the writers of the JVL like it or not it is a fact that Warburg came to the United States where he immediately organized the Federal Reserve System that was owned as a private enterprise by these so-called Socialists by nine international Jewish banking firms plus Rockefeller. This is an undeniable fact.

The Federal Reserve controlled, and still controls, US currency lending it to the US for use. Thus the dollar was a Jewish financial instrument for the use of which US taxpayers paid the Jewish owned Federal Reserve System interest every year. Apparently the Jews thought Ford and others were ignorant of what was happening. Quite fatuous on their part.

While, as I understand it, the Jews still deny that Wilson brought rafts of Jews into government beginning with his inauguration in 1913. In 1917 the WIB board was virtually a Jewish agency. This was all known at the time but strenuously denied by the Jews. Its director was Bernard Baruch who became the grand old Jewish advisor of presidents later in life.

Wilson appointed the first Jew, Louis Brandeis, to the Supreme Court. Brandeis, an ardent Zionist, was reputed to be the wisest of the wise, the sagest of the sage and a universal genius. FDR, a disciple of Wilson in these years, would brand Brandeis during his own administration ‘our Isaiah.’ So while the writers of JVL may simper because ‘rumors were dredged up’ that Wilson took ‘secret’ orders from Brandeis over the phone, while deleting the pejorative word secret, it is not unlikely that Wilson did discuss situations with the ‘wisest of the wise’ whether over the phone or face to face. Nothing would be more likely.

Indeed, the Jews so loved Justice Brandeis that they named their national university in the US Brandeis University after him. He and the arch criminal Arnold Rothstein were the big Jewish men of he teens and twenties. Just recently the Jews opened a ‘national’ museum in Las Vegas celebrating Rothstein and other specifically Jewish criminals.

While the railroads were nationalized the Wilson Administration demanded that the major industries file financial statements and business plans with the WIB. The auto industry objected to this rightly believing that through the Jews who ran the WIB their industrial knowledge would pass into the hands of the Jews giving them an inestimable advantage.

One imagines that the JVL will pooh pooh this yet it remains true that at the end of WWII the Alien Properties Board that controlled the confiscated properties of the Germans and Japanese valued into the billions was directed by the Jew David Bazelon who sold these properties without bids to his fellow Jews at less than fire sale prices making their post-war fortunes while robbing American tax payers.

The auto makers then were right to protest these regulations. They, especially the Dodge brothers, did so vociferously while using intemperate racial slurs directed at Baruch that Baruch later rapid when the Dodge Brothers both died mysterious deaths in 1920. There was even an attempt made on Ford’s life.

After the war friction between Ford and his major stockholder James Couzens was such that Ford was forced to buy him out. Not having the necessary cash he was forced to violate his principles and go to the bankers. They shortly called the loan that Ford was unable to meet on short notice. However by drastic reorganization of his business he was able to meet the loan this thwarting a Jewish attempt to take over Ford Motors. Harboring resentments he was now his own man.

As a major condemnation the JVL says that: ‘He opposed various symbols of social and cultural change aound him, including Hollywood movies, out of house child care, government regulation of business, Eastern European immigration and new styles in dress and music.

Consider these defamatory ‘sins’ in the context of the times. Hollywood movies were under constant attack during the teens and twenties. There were many local moves to ban them. Carl Laemmle of Universal, himself a Jew, even pledged to make no more anti-Semitic movies. The Catholic leagues were pressing for censorship. In 1921 in an effort to quiet criticism Hollywood itself established the Hays Office to censor themselves. Self-censorship is always especially effective. Will Hays, Hardings very effective Postmaster General, was lured away at a royal salary of millions in today’s currency to run it. So Ford opposed the immorality of Hollywood movies? Then he was on the right side.

He opposed government regulation of business? Well, Harding and the Republican Interregnum of 1920 to 1933 repudiated Wilsonian socialism returning the railroads to private hands and returning the twenties to the most laissez-faire period of American business. Once again Ford was on the right side.

Ford opposed Eastern European immigration? Eastern European is code for Jews. The Jews were in the process of organizing the whole of European Jewry for transportation to the US. Reacting to this the country passed restrictive laws in 1921 and 1924 thwarting the Jewish plan. Once again Ford was in tune with universal sentiment. Me thinketh that Jewish protests are spurious.

As for new styles in dress and music neither did these new modes go unchallenged by a vociferous public while as a young boy in Michigan in the late forties we were still under the influence of Ford’s musical taste singing folk songs on a daily basis in class. One might then without too much of a stretch claim that Ford was the father of the folk revival of the fifties and sixties. It will be remembered that Carl Sandburg published his compendium of old timey songs in this period also.

So, really, the writers of the Jewish Virtual Library ought to either develop better research methods or lose some their ethnocentric chauvinism and xenophobia.

Ford, then, may fairly be said to have been in a contest not of his own making with the Jews when he began to publish his newspaper the Dearborn Independent.

The implication in the Jewish Virtual Library article is that Ford was some insane irate individual crazed lone wolf anti-Semite. Once again, placed in the historical context of the times this accusation is completely false. In fact the Communist Revolution in Russia created a huge furor with large factions in all European countries pointing to the huge involvement of Jews in not only the successful revolution in Russia but all the failed national revolutions of Europe and yes, that of the US. The evidence was overwhelming, denial was absurd, however that was the tack the Jews took.

Jewish damage controllers rushed into the fray howling anti-Semitic charges right, left and down the middle. As a centerpiece they chose a negligible manifesto culled from earlier Jewish writings called the Protocols Of The Learned Elders Of Zion. The Protocols was a pale imitation of Marx’s Communist Manifesto, hardly worth bothering about. Certainly it was amateurish next to the total Jewish assault on Western Culture led by the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory that would continue from the early twenties through today backed by the emerging technologies of movies, radio and TV. The Jews still talk about the Protocols as some sort of horror.

Ford should have dismissed the book as some sort of Jewish folly but he took it seriously and actually published it as the first volume of his four volume series of essays, The International Jew.

Ford’s use of he term international Jews did not refer to all Jews. Ford himself was tolerant of all religions and nationalities including the Negroes, more than he should have been. Ford’s point was that there was a cadre of international Jewish politicians just as there was an international Communist conspiracy. This cadre of Jewish politicians was easily identifiable although Ford did not name them, probably because they would sue him as he nevertheless was three times. For a confirmation of Ford’s allegations read my post linked above. Louis Marshall who was the international Jewish secretary of state confirms Ford’s analysis in his collected letters.

Louis Marshall

Now, Cameron’s essays approved by Ford were not wild eyed anti-Semitic rantings as the JVL claims but were well researched documented essays concerning Jewish involvement in specific areas of American society. Ford amassed a several thousand volume library of Jewish writings pro and con that were at Cameron‘s hand. When Ford discontinued his contest with the Jews he asked them what he was to do with the library. He was absolutely disgusted when he was told to donate the library to the Jewish Theological Seminary in Cincinnati. Whatever became of the library is not known.

The articles were however ‘critical theory’ of Jewish activities making them unforgivable in Jewish eyes. Thus, the astonishing campaign of vilification against Ford, slanderous, vile and mean spirited.

The International Jew articles are readily available for reading on the internet today for the inspection of the curious.

Finally, the JVL asserts: Ford’s attempt to prevent unionism at his plants produced strikes and violence, mostly provoked by Ford’s own strike breakers.

While it is true that Ford saw no need for unions as he believed that he took better care of his employee’s interests than any union thugs could.

Ford was the first industrialist to ensure a clean, well lighted, airy work environment for his employees. Even in the Communist Charlie Chaplin’s parody of Ford’s assembly line in his movie Modern Times the line was immaculate. You could eat off the floor. Ford’s line was designed so that there would be little bending and stooping. The parts passed by waist high.

Taylorite efficiency experts determined the most efficient movements to do a task with maximum efficiency. Every consideration of the employee was taken. I, myself, have worked the line at a GM assembly plant, I know how it is done. I know the human material that has to be managed and it is difficult material. Molding the steel is easier.

In addition when Ford realized the money that could be made by efficient operation combined with an unsaturated seemingly inexhaustible demand he voluntarily with no prompting doubled the wages of his employees.

From 1914 to the Depression he increased wages so that by the beginning of the Depression he was paying eight dollars a day or better than three times his 1914 wage. The Depression contrived by the Judaeo-Left forced him to lower wages rather than raising them which he would have continued to do. This reduction caused Ford great anxiety as though he had failed his employees.

Now, the Reds had never forgiven Ford for doubling wages back in ‘14. They hated him and wanted to destroy that symbol of capitalist efficiency, Ford’s River Rouge plant.

While writers such as at the JVL seem to assume that unions were universally favored and Ford was alone in not favoring them, nothing could be further from the truth. Remember the JVL is Jewish fantasy and not history. Workers except for Red doctrinaires didn’t want unions. Unions made little to no headway until the Reds got their man, FDR, into the White House where he passed laws declaring companies and workers had to accept them whether they wanted them or not. Most workers didn’t feel the need for another boss and more fees, taxes by another name, extorted by union thus and they were criminal thugs that nobody can deny. Even today after seventy yeas of favoritism less than 25% of workers belong to unions.

Using FDR’s Wagner Act then the Communists organized a march on River Rouge with the express intent of smashing the assembly line and destroying Ford Motors. Of course the writers at the JVL think any thwarting of their wishes is criminal so Ford’s successful defense of his property in their eyes is a criminal offence. Suffice it to say that in the Battle Of The Overpass two opposing armies were fighting a war that Ford won.

That the JVL can write such twaddle as the Ford article and hope to pass it off as objective history is amazing. After all, the whole world is not only watching but reading. This will not pass.

It is writing such as this at the Jewish Virtual Library that gives the internet a bad name. These people should be ashamed of themselves.
